What is a Veteran?
Just look around
Right where you're standing, he/she fought for that ground.
A vet is a person who answered the call, who went into war and gave it their all.
He/she defended a way of life that we love,
but much preferred peace like the way of the dove.
He/she asked not the reason as they stood in the trench.
He/she faltered not once in the muck and the stench
As soldiers in legions, they stood side by side.
they knew some would fall as many more died.
They whispered their prayers in a helmet of sweat.
Shells bursting above wouldn't let them forget.
Tears in their eyes, as their friend lay so still.
One hour ago, he was king of the hill.
Many more wounded, spilling of life.
When will it end, this battle of strife?
For many the battles never will end.
Now they are civilians and find they can't blend.
Some are disabled, and some are disturbed.
After coming from hell, they find they've been curbed.
A veteran is special, to be not denied.
He/she put it up front, they need never hide.
Now is the time to honor our vets.
Remember their pain, don't ever forget.

Since its official establishment, June 14, 1775 — more than a year before the Declaration of Independence — the U.S. Army has played a vital role in the growth and development of the American nation. Drawing on both long-standing militia traditions and recently introduced professional standards, it won the new republic's independence in an arduous eight-year struggle against Great Britain. At times, the Army provided the lone symbol of nationhood around which patriots rallied.
The United States Navy was officially authorized by the Continental Congress on October 13, 1775 in the midst of the American Revolution. Despite having just a small fleet of 27 ships and enduring overwhelming odds, the Navy had success in defending our shores for freedom. Two hundred years later, we have developed into the world’s largest and most powerful naval force. The modern Navy of today is made up of hundreds of ships, including aircraft carriers, submarines, and a variety of surface ships and thousands of aircraft.

The Marine Corps was founded on November 10, 1775, when the Continental Congress ordered that two battalions of Marines be raised for service as landing forces with the fleet. Marines have participated in all wars of the United States, being in most instances first, or among the first, to fight. In addition, Marines have executed more than 300 landings on foreign shores and served in every major U.S. naval action since 1775.
The United States Coast Guard, one of the country's five armed services, is a unique agency of the federal government. We trace our history to 4 August 1790, when the first Congress authorized the construction of ten vessels to enforce tariff and trade laws and to prevent smuggling. Known variously through the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries as the Revenue Marine and the Revenue Cutter Service, we expanded in size and responsibilities as the nation grew.

The official birth date of the Army National Guard as a reserve component of the Army is December 13, 1636. On this date, the Massachusetts colonial legislature directed that the colony's existing militia companies be organized into three regiments. This date is recognized based upon the Department of Defense's practice of adopting the dates of initial authorizing legislation for organized units as the birthdates of the active and reserve components of the armed services.
The 1947 National Security Act restructured The United States military and intelligence agencies in the aftermath of World War II. On September 18, 1947, President Truman signed the National Security Act establishing the U.S. Airforce on board the first Air Force One, a VC 54C.
